29.2 ST. CLAIR

The district of St. Clair is bounded by Maraval Road on the East; Tragarete Road on the South; the Maraval River on the West and Serpentine to the North [some sources show it as Long Circular Road to the North]. St. Clair is a relatively small district of the city of Port of Spain and yet it features an unusually high number of parks: the Queen’s Park Oval; King George V Park [now known as Nelson Mandela Park], Jackson Square, Serpentine Park, and smaller triangular grassed parks not to mention the adjacent Queen’s Park Savannah. The architecture of St. Clair reflects its history as displayed by the Magnificent Seven; Stollmeyer’s Castle; Whitehall; The Roman Catholic Archbishop’s residence; Roomor House; Mille Fleur; Hayes Court and Queen’s Royal College amongst other heritage buildings. St Clair Avenue is also fast becoming known for its contemporary architectural additions to the city.
